About maintenance or various problems you may have with your bike.
General Questions
- I hear creaking in the skeleton. What could be going on? What should I do?
The noise may come from the Bottom Bracket mechanism, which is the most common cause of noise, especially in aluminium frames. It occurs when the disc arm rotates under load and is caused by the friction of the threads of the medium friction cup (B.B. set) and medium friction box (B.B. shell). Lubrication of the thread is needed. Consult an authorised IDEAL store.
Noise can be caused by loose assembly or loosening of individual pedal or disc arm components (disc arm blades, tapered pedals, etc.). Consult an authorised IDEAL store.
The frame may be cracked and the noise may be coming from the crack. Consult an authorised IDEAL store.
Noise can come from peripheral parts of the bicycle that are in direct or indirect contact with the frame, e.g. saddle neck and saddle. A check for correct assembly/tightening and lubrication of peripheral components is required. Consult an authorised IDEAL dealer.
- When do I have to have my bike serviced?
At regular intervals and depending on the use of the bicycle, a check of the bicycle’s friction is required: fork cups, middle friction, front and rear centre, pedals. Consult the IDEAL maintenance card.
- The fork of my bike is unstable. What should I do?
An inspection at an authorised IDEAL store is required. Proper control in fork glasses is particularly important. It is directly related to the safety of the rider. Using the bicycle with worn or loose parts is dangerous.
- How can I check if the fork cups are properly clamped?
While sitting on the bike (stationary), keep the front brake cuff pressed and simultaneously move the bike back and forth. With your free hand touch the top of the fork cups. If you feel any kind of movement (gambling) and/or noise, an immediate check and maintenance at an authorized IDEAL store is required. Using the bicycle with worn or loose parts is dangerous. Particular attention should be paid to bicycles with suspension forks. In this case, the check should be made at the point where the upper legs enter the lower legs. If you feel any kind of instability, an immediate check and maintenance at an authorised IDEAL store is required. Using the bicycle with worn or loose parts is dangerous.
- Why do I have reduced performance on the disc brake(s) (mechanical-hydraulic) of my bike? What should I do?
The most common cause of reduced performance and noise from disc brakes is the contact of lubricant, grease or cleaner with the disc and pads. Usually, it occurs after maintenance or cleaning of the bicycle. Contact an authorised IDEAL dealer for proper system setup.
It is possible that nuggets of friction material on the pads may have stuck to the disc or an object (usually a stone) may have stuck on the brake pads, causing noise. Contact an authorized IDEAL store to clean the drive and replace the pads.
Due to misalignment. Contact an authorised IDEAL dealer for proper system setup. – There is air in the brake system (hydraulic disc brakes). In this case there is increased travel and a spongy feeling on the brake calliper. System venting is required. Contact an authorised IDEAL store.
Due to poor condition or poor lubrication of the inner and outer wire (mechanical disc brakes). Their replacement is required. Contact an authorised IDEAL store.
Due to wear on the pads. Replacement with genuine spare parts at an authorised IDEAL store is required.
- What is the difference between v-brakes and disc brakes?
There are important differences between the two. Here are some key ones:
Usually disc brakes are heavier, more complex, difficult to adjust and expensive than v-brakes.
The performance of disc brakes is not affected by wheel radiation, whereas v-brakes are sensitive in this area.
Disc brakes are little to no affected by water, mud and dust, unlike v-brake shoes, which are more sensitive.
- The rear gear system of my bike is not performing well, despite the adjustment that was made to it. What could be going on?
The correct adjustment has not been made according to the instructions of the component manufacturer. Contact an authorised IDEAL store.
There is incompatibility in the components that make up the transmission system (gear lever, wires, chain, front gearbox, rear gearbox). Contact an authorised IDEAL store.
The point on the frame where the rear derailleur hanger screws in is twisted. Contact an authorised IDEAL store.
The external and internal gear cables are likely to be rusted, deformed or damaged. Contact an authorised IDEAL store.
- What should I look out for when I want to upgrade my bike?
Ensure compatibility of old and new components. Contact an authorised IDEAL store.
- What is the appropriate size, by age, for children's bicycles?
The size depends on the physical development of each child and the choice of size is based on the safety of the rider. We have provided an estimate, but for specific information, we recommend that you visit an authorised IDEAL store:
2-4 years: 10″/12″
4-6 years: 14″/16″
6-8 years: 18″/20″
8-10 years old: 20″/24″
